Eligibility and Guidance

Before you proceed with an application, please check the following criteria to ensure that you are eligible to apply to become a Police Support Volunteer.

Should you have any further questions after reading the below, please get in touch with us via email, here.

Age
You must be 16 years of age or over at the time of applying.
Applicants below the age of 18 must have their forms countersigned by a parent or guardian.
Vetting
As a Police Support Volunteer, you will be security vetted to an appropriate National police vetting level according to the role you have applied against. This information is collected, if successful, following an informal interview.
Nationality
In order to be eligible to apply as a Police Support Volunteer you must be either:
  • A British citizen or a member of the EC/EEA.
  • Commonwealth citizens and foreign nationals who are resident in the UK and free from restrictions are also eligible to apply.
Ineligible Occupations and Activities
You cannot be considered for appointment as a Police Support Volunteer if there would be a significant chance that this could lead to a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest may result in compromising the obligations of being a Police Support Volunteer and your effectiveness in your professional life, or any other voluntary role you perform. It is important to minimise the risk that police support volunteers might be encouraged to abuse their position within the police service and for this reason an application may be refused if you are:
  • A Police and Crime Commissioner employee.
  • A Magistrate, Clerk to the Justices or a Clerk to the Courts.
  • A Probation Officer, Bailiff or Warrant Officer.
  • A Liquor Licence holder or Licensed Premises manager – or your spouse is.
  • A Licensee of betting or gaming establishments.
  • A Private Detective or Enquiry Agent.
  • A Security Officer, Security Guard or you work as Door Staff.
  • A Custody Officer or Custody Escort Officer.
  • A Serving member of HM Forces.
  • Ready to volunteer for a cause you believe in?

What we do with your information?

We collect this information so that we can keep you up-to-date with new volunteering opportunities once they become available. We may also send you our CiP newsletter from time to time.

This information is stored on a secure police server.

The information can only be accessed by members of the Citizens in Policing team and by people who have been granted permission to access the CiP folders. All of these people are staff and police officers who have passed the police security vetting procedures.

If you have submitted an application form against a current vacancy, your form will be sent to our Resourcing department where they will retain your information. These records are normally kept for 7 years if you are offered a position and only 6 months if you are not. However, if you have shown an interest in being kept informed of new roles your information will be kept for longer by the Resourcing department and not the Citizens in Policing team.

If you want to have the emailed information deleted, or removed from any Force database, please email Citizens in Policing and this process may take up to 14 working days. We will email you to let you know that you have deleted all the information from our systems.

This information is recorded and retained by the Citizens in Policing (CiP) team and may be shared with other departments within Devon and Cornwall Police. After 6 months from the date of submission, your information will be deleted from the records held with Citizens in Policing. It is your responsibility to resubmit your current information after 6 months, should you wish to continue to receive emails and correspondence from the Citizens in Policing team.
