What allowances are available?

Working for Devon & Cornwall Police is very rewarding, and also comes with lots of allowances and benefits too! We have provided some information on the range of allowances that are available below.

Irregular Hours Payment

An annual allowance paid monthly, in addition to the salary. The rate paid is applicable to hours worked before 0700 or after 1830 and dependent on the average hours worked per week, which is defined as the number of weeks in which the pattern repeats itself, over a minimum of two weeks, and will be either:

  • 7.5%
  • 10%

Shift allowance

An annual allowance paid monthly, in addition to the salary. The rate paid is dependent on the shift pattern worked and will be:

  • 12.5%
  • 14%
  • 20%

Weekend working

Paid at the rate of time and a half for all hours worked and is claimed on a monthly basis with payment in arrears, where the working day forms part of regular working pattern.

Night working

Paid at the rate of time and a third for all hours worked between 2000 and 0600, where the working day forms part of regular working pattern. This will only apply where an employee is not entitled to receive a shift allowance or an irregular hours allowance.

Standby

Currently £32.23 for weekdays and £64.46 for weekends*. The payment covers the requirement to be available to deal with work issues either away from or at the workplace and the completion of all necessary paperwork arising from the standby period and which is outside of the employee’s normal contracted working hours. An employee who is called out shall be paid the appropriate enhanced rate of pay for all time necessarily spent working. An employee who responds to an emergency call out will be paid a minimum of 4 hours at the appropriate enhanced rate of pay for each period of attendance. A period of attendance begins at the time of the call out and continues until completion of the task. The call out payment will cover a second call out in the same four hour period.

Market supplement / market forces supplement

Is awarded when a role operates within a highly competitive market or recruitment challenges are experienced. It is a separate, annual and pensionable supplement to the basic salary associated with the role and is paid on a monthly basis. It is reviewed annually.

Acting duties

When undertaking the full duties and responsibilities of a higher graded post for a minimum period of 10 days, employees will be paid at the higher grade.

Additional payment / Honourarium

Is paid if the employee is required to undertake some or all of the duties and responsibilities of a higher graded post over an extended period.

Temporary promotion

If required to undertake the full duties and responsibilities of a higher graded post over an extended period exceeding 3 months, the employee will be temporary promoted and paid at the higher salary for the duration of the temporary promotion.

An annual payment of currently £216 is awarded to qualified and recognised work based Safety Fire Wardens*.

Interpreters/Translators

Payment for employees who are members of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters who are asked to interpret during the course of their duties.

ICT Standby and Overtime

Some ICT roles provide a 24/7 ICT Support Service requiring the post-holder to participate in an on-call (Stand-by) rota when deemed proficient to do so by the Head of ICT Services. The requirement is currently one week in every six, although this may become more or less frequent depending on future ICT operational requirements.

A Standby allowance will be applicable and in the case of a callout whilst on standby, any overtime worked will be paid at the appropriate rate.
