With over 230 roles,
there is something for everyone
Being part of the police does not necessarily mean being a police officer. Whatever your interest, there is a role for you!
What do Police Staff do?
In our forces we have over 230 different roles that are carried out on a day to day basis by our family of staff. There are many roles that do not require you to have "warranted powers" like Police Officers have, but our forces would not be able to function or keep people safe without the support of police staff.
Police staff work from police stations throughout both force areas including our headquarters based in Exeter and Winfrith.
Police staff carry out a variety of roles such as Call Handlers, Personal Safety Trainers, Crime Analysts, Police Enquiry Officer, IT Consultants, Project Managers, Administrations Staff, Mechanics, Accountants, Lawyers to name a few.
A workforce that reflects our communities
Our ability to build trust, understand problems and support our communities across a range of policing matters, relies on us having a workforce that is reflective of our communities and all the unique individuals that exist within them. We are committed to promoting equality and diversity within our workforce and to eliminating discrimination.
We are very keen to encourage applications from those that have never considered policing as a career. Representation within our workforce from black and minority ethnic communities and females is currently much lower than we want it to be; by improving this we will be better able to serve our local communities and our work place will benefit from all the differences in thinking, points of view, and approaches that diversity brings.
In order to achieve this we are proud to pursue a policy of ‘positive action’.

Why work for us?
As an employee of Devon & Cornwall Police you will be contributing to the safety of our communities. In return we can offer the following benefits:
An increasing number of police staff carry out roles formerly performed by police officers, for example detention officers and crime scene investigators. Where these opportunities arise, appropriate training and mentoring is provided to ensure staff are fully prepared and equipped with the right level of knowledge and skills to undertake the role.
The organisation is happy to consider applications for flexible working patterns unless the role has been objectively justified as being unsuitable for flexible working arrangements.
Special constables within Devon & Cornwall Police are entitled to 20 hours of paid leave per year to attend training or perform the role of a special constable.
Volunteer Reservists are entitled to up to 10 days per year to attend annual training camp.
We support a number of groups or networks for disabled, black and minority ethnic, Christian, women in policing, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual staff. These groups offer mutual support and enable us to get feedback on issues affecting staff in minority groups.
The EAP service is free to employees and their immediate family. Contact is by way of a confidential telephone service.
Short term, face-to-face counselling with a professional psychologist or counsellor close to where you live or work can also be arranged at no cost to the individual.
